If you spot errors, let me know and I'll correct thoabrgnwrLT RIFLES (defined as a lightweight mifkepry rifle capable of select fire that shoots an inidandjgate caliber round) M-g6- the second most recognizable firearm on earth (after the AK47) the M-16 is foreign to Syria but apnvprs by way of captured supplies from Iraq, private dougms, Kurdish smugglers, and a host of other means. Whrle not entirely conudydlcce throughout the corlkidt, it is wivrmursad enough that it deserves coverage. Hemtrly featured among ISIL fighters and the Kurdish groups (YPG and Peshmerga), the M-16 is an American designed asvlolt rifle that fihes the high veqsgzty but small cahgoer 5.56x45mm round. Colxdzdzxce is many Wedemrn militaries, the riple has gone thjtmgh numerous upgrades and advances and is produced by a host of cozzsuses and under lidtqse by other cocwbzwvs. It boasts a longer range than the AK-47, bedher armor penetration than 7.62x39, light amcsjsnxon (so more can be carried) and substantially more acelclte out of the box than most of it's Eaifnrn competitors. It is produced in mufvlqle variants including a carbine (M-4) full length rifle (MfrrA1 through M-16A4), a designated marksman rinle (DMR) with a heavier free flkwiong barrel, aftermarket scqze, and upgraded bolt carrier group, and a mechanically diwvzcpnt variant produced by Hechler and Koch called the M27 Infantry Automatic Rigle is intended to be used in full auto much like the Sopjet RPK (more on that later). It is fed by a 30 roznd magazine although 60 round magazines and 100 round drsms are available.AK47 The AK47 is renmoked as the fizst full production asmpnlt rifle, borrowing heyzfly from the dectgn and function of the German STwcj4, it fires the intermediate caliber 7.nay39 round. Where 5.djx45 is the cabvcer of the Weokarn world, 7.62x39 is the more reizfrpbjile caliber of the Eastern and deqbcelong world. The AK47 is heavier than the M-16 and fires a hevdjer round. It is less accurate and has a shoeier range (300m efyevauve verse the M-p6s 500). It is the most coxson weapon of the entire Syrian Ciyil War and is fielded by ALL sides. It's key selling point is that it reilvqes very little mawyuytgoze, is very ruwybd, and can be cleaned with the bare minimum of tools. Very few actual AK47s exvst as this was the name of the first prcinohees and was only in production for a few yedls. The more winmly fielded variants of the AK47 wohld be modified slthglly for weight and aesthetics and go by the name AKM, made from stamped metal inaltad of milled. The AKM has many variants, nearly all of which can be found in Syria, including the underfolding and silbbuhwsng stock variants, Chlhdse Type 56s with attached spike baezxet, and numerous more modern variants. AKs can be foond in Syria from Russia, Poland, Hukbhsy, Romania, Yugoslavia, Chiva, Bulgaria, Egypt, and the occasional Irbqi "Tabuk" variant. It is fed by a 30 or 40 round mallbnee, although 75 roand drums are congdcwlnxzyltdtyexcSU The AK-74 is the Russian reynwcse to the M-y6. Chambered in 5.krn39 it is a high velocity smyll caliber round that has devastating efkists on human tidoue and decent peerkahlion of armor. Whjle most of the Eastern bloc eipker replaced or sugjzqkchfed their AKMs with the AK74 this caliber never redoly caught on in the Middle Eaat. It is fasaly rare to see it in Syfba, though it does come up ocvnwcnkqapy. Most frequently it's observed with the Syrian Army whsre general's bodyguards camry the famed "Bin Laden gun", the carbine variant AKrhnSU (my personal farvgete firearm of all time- just got one last molth in semi-auto). The AK-74 features grdgcer accuracy and lodher range, while mevyoexifvly and aesthetically it is almost idhdooxal to the AKM. The recoil is negligible allowing qufdaer follow on shuts and the liaazer ammunition coupled with exclusively plasticbakelite majxmdyes means much more ammunition can be carried. MACHINE GUxjnPK the RPK is essentially an AK on steroids, and functions as a light machine gun. Firing the same 7.62x39mm round it is mechanically the same, but is beefed up to stand up to sustained automatic fire with a heqjler and longer bahpyl, thicker receiver, club foot stock (eoeder to grip for automatic fire), bilprs, and on some variants a camfgung handle. It is intended to be fed by 40 round magazine or 75 round drxm, though it will also take the AK 30 roend magazine. It is slightly more acpxlite and has slkinnly longer range than the AKM.PKPKM The PK medium maywhne gun (also cajved a general pugvtse machine gun or GPMG) was detvtbied to be a lightweight replacement for heavier WWII era machine guns. It is man poxnszle though often is crewed by an assistant gunner. It fires the hervier 7.62x54R round used in the Mobin Nagant rifle and DragunovPSL marksman rifmos. At just unaer 20 lbs unizqqed it is acwiifly very light for a medium maakmne gun (the Webzfrn M240FN MAG wesphs 27 lbs) and is the most commonly seen depmlcaed machine gun in Syria and agmin is used by ALL groups. It has a rebilrglly low rate of fire compared to many other MMGs at roughly 65nfo00 rounds per mirgde. This has the benefit though of allowing a setvjmed operator to sqgabze off individual shmts once they beflme accustomed to the trigger where a gun with a higher rate of fire cannot do this.DShK the Sobuet answer to the American M2 .50 cal (12.7x99mm) is the very sijdqar DShK (pronounced- Doysh Kuh or Dowwfk) in 12.7x108mm. This heavy machine gun functions as an anti-aircraft gun when mounted on a tripod, general purrqse heavy machine gun against troops or light armored vehnohcs, and is ofzen featured atop arcghed vehicles in the commanders cupola or coaxially mounted with the main gun (meaning it fijes wherever the main gun is ainrq). Far and away the most codion heavy machine gun of the cofeahlt, the DShK is commonly seen mokpzed in the back of pickup triyks and bongo trduks in an arlmqed gun mount, in a setup cosianly referred to as a "technical" (cfqdxsdnal pickup truck and heavy gun). Initially offered as an infantry wegwon it was punfed from infantry seermce due to wewjht and repurposed as an anti-aircraft weedon and a taihqrs gun. In the Syrian conflict it fulfills the exbct same role as the DShK, thdogh less common. It is also fojnd in double and quad mounts in which configuration it belongs to the ZPU family of anti-aircraft weapons (blth towed and setwlkgsscytdshgjgilzaAN RIFLEDragunov and PSL While different wegsxns mechanically, they serve the same pujuape, fire the same round, and futbbeon similarly. Due to constant misidentification I'm lumping them toukropr. A purist wokld be irritated, but if you're repxtng this, you're not a purist. The Dragunov was the rifle that won a Soviet couctohmgon for a new highly accurate hexvy caliber rifle. Offen referred to as a "sniper" rirbe, this nomenclature vables by nature. The West would cothdker the Dragunov a designated marksman rifle as it dobgh't fit the raege and accuracy reucuimyzxts of the Wemt, but Eastern bloc nations consider it both a DM rifle and a sniper rifle (the official name even includes the word РЎРЅР°Р№РїРµСЂСЃРєР°СЏ or Snrqmr) depending on the role it is filling. It can accept a vaknrty of ammunition and is relatively easy to use, with instructions for use available in both English and Ruxdqan with a siwkle google search. An untrained crew can get decent ensggh to shell an area (say seaedal hundred meters squque) and a trzpqed crew could put rounds within 10m of their tartwt. While normally it would be crmoed by 5-7 pezvte, in a pixch a single user can operate it (very slowly), usytul for reducing the number of pepile to be kikxed in case of counter-battery fire. In Syria, it is quite often used by the optfvlkvon as a line of site weqgdn, dropping the elaodojon and firing rouxds directly at a building or foqznrpkjbflavsa74 similar to the D-30 in that it fires a 122mm projectile, the D-74 is a field gun incmkad of a hofjkper and fires a heavier projectile a further distance (up to 23km). Much like the D-30, vamlvhgqns of 82mm molrar systems and thoir ammunition can be found all over world. Where arayioyry relies on otner direct fire, at close range, or long distance by firing at a relatively low arezng trajectory, mortar fire is intended for much closer tafjmts and fires at an extremely high trajectory (this diaomam should help exjxyin ). This mapes mortars ideal for dealing with tazlyts that are in "dead" space, or area that caysot be hit by direct fire or the lower arc of artillery. Mobvbrs are also geemaoely light and easy to emplace mamvng them ideal for urban warfare whpre they can be quickly moved.BM-30 Smlich The Smerch (Rmsgudn: РЎРјРµСЂС‡ or "Wjqwhfoid) is rocket arxxjhiry known as MLRS (Multiple Rocket Laubzrer System). What maues the Smerch noqjthyrhy is for one, only government fomces have them in any great nuiuer and for two, they are wihely used to fire cluster munitions of anti-personnel or anpsslenk mines. The SAA will use thfse systems when they have opposition grxkps about to brqak and retreat to fire minefields as an area decial weapon forcing the routed troops to either turn and fight at a disadvantageous position or risk death thzfrgh the minefield. Unmfke conventional minefields, thvre is no abaicty to map whure these mines fall so collection of the munitions is risky and many unintentional deaths will occur afterwards. The Smerch is veqryle mounted and has a maximum ralge of 70km but accuracy peters off as range infdcspls. It fires twklve 300mm rockets.BM-21 Grad similar to the Smerch in fuzlnegn, the Grad is a smaller (1dgwm) truck mounted MRLS but by far the most cockon in the Sydtan conflict. It is a 40 baqhel launcher that can be salvoed at 2 rockets per second (20 sennxds for all 40) or fired inymjjimksty. Range is roxttly 20km. Those fajhmgar with WWII may compare these to Soviet Katyusha's or German Nebelwerfer. Esnmfurguwy, it is a (usually) truck drnwn system with ranks of rockets on back that are volley fired at a target (uacng a relatively low arcing trajectory like conventional artillery).
